Pinewoods Camp is located in a peaceful, wooded setting in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Housing is generally in rustic screened cabins with
shared bathrooms nearby. The cabins and outdoor dance pavilions are scattered
among pine groves. The Camphouse, used for concerts and social gatherings, and
the open-air dining hall both look out over the larger of two clear ponds
available for swimming and boating.
Labor Day Weekend
provides an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings of the camp
with a relaxed schedule of classes and events. We offer a program of English
and American dance and music along with a variety of staff-led and camper-led
workshops and activities for adults and kids.
Schedule
- Camp
opens at 3:00 PM on Saturday; the
session ends with breakfast on Tuesday morning. No visitors or part-time
campers are permitted. We’re making some
changes to the weekend this year. Read
on to find out more.
Staff - We are excited to have
Lisa Sieverts leading our American Dances and Marcie Van Cleave to lead our
English Dances. We will dance to the
music of Eric Buddington, Vince O’Donnell, Patrick Yacono, Joyce Crouch, Norb Spencer,
Tony, A., Eric Martin, and Sue Janssen.
Jamie Blachley from Bowery Boys will run a Morris Intensive program for
the weekend. In addition, Janet Scudder
and Anne Goodwin will coordinate, plan and run workshops for children of all
ages
Daytime Workshops. This
year, our staff will run structured morning workshops in English, American
& Morris Dance. There will also be children's workshops during those times
so parents can go dancing while their children are involved in their own
activity. There will be no camp
gathering this year in order to have time to run the morning program. Afternoon workshops will be a combination of
camper led and staff led activities. If
you have something you would like to share with your fellow campers, go for it!
In the past, people have lead workshops in storytelling, dance band, sing
alongs, scavenger hunts, nature walks, party games and more. Of course, there’s always plenty of time for
swimming, canoeing, singing, jamming, volley ball, playing games or just plain
hanging out.
Evening Dances. Our talented staff will lead a
mix of English and American dances. Prior dance experience is not required.
Bring clean shoes that you use only for dancing. Sunday night there will be a
theme dance which allows dressing up for those who will.
Room, Board,
& Camp Arrangements. Room and board are included in the fees. The dining hall
accommodates vegetarians as well as omnivores. Please let us know about any
special diets.
Pinewoods Camp provides beds, mattresses, and pillows. Campers
bring sheets, blankets, any other bedding you require, and towels. (Most
bathrooms don’t have paper towels.) A few blankets are available to rent, but
don’t plan on that. Nights can be quite cool on Labor Day weekend, so bring
warm bedding. Cabins are not heated. Cabins have electrical power for lighting
and low-power devices, but not for hair dryers or other high-power devices.
Housing and roommate preferences will be honored as much as
possible. Unless you state a roommate preference, we will assign you a roommate
of the same sex.
Helping Out.
All campers are assigned jobs to help the weekend run smoothly and keep costs
down. Children and adults are assigned jobs by age, ability, and preference.
Please state any job preferences or restrictions on your application.
Scholarships.
A few half-fee work scholarships are available for campers willing to assist
with kitchen cleanup. Note it on your application if you are interested in
these.
Application Procedure.
Several people may apply together as a group. A group will be considered a
single unit for admission purposes, but members need not be related, and need
not room together. Correspondence will be mailed to the contact person listed
on the application. The contact person will be responsible for getting
information to the other members of the group.
Acceptance notices will start going out July 10th.
A deposit of $50 ($40 for under age 4) per person is required to reserve
a place. If you
cancel in writing before 15 August, we will refund your
deposit less $20 per camper. After 15
August, we will refund payments over the minimum deposit only if we can fill
your place(s) in camp.
Information for Parents. Pinewoods Camp was not designed
for children. Campers under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible
adult. More information and a liability release form will be sent to those
who apply with children. Children are
expected to participate in group activities or be under the supervision of a
responsible adult at all times. Unsupervised children are a danger to
themselves and a distraction to those participating in programs. During evening
dances, children should be in the dance pavilion and participating, or in bed
or otherwise supervised away from the pavilion.
There are no cribs or other special equipment for children
in camp, so please bring a portable crib for small children, and note “have
bed” for them on the application form.
Housing for children under 12 will
be near their parents, but not necessarily in the same cabin, unless you
request otherwise. Families with similar-age children will be grouped together
when possible. A baby-sitting collaborative may be available if parents wish to
organize one.
Cars. Parking space is limited, and the use of cars in the camp
is restricted to loading/unloading times. You’ll be assigned a parking space
when you arrive at camp. Car-pooling is encouraged.
